Common Questions

Answers before
you even ask.

Reaching out about your child's speech can feel like a big step. Here are the questions we hear most often from families — and straightforward answers to help you move forward with confidence.

What are signs my child might need speech therapy?
+
Every child develops at their own pace, but some general milestones can help. Consider reaching out if your child:

• Isn't babbling by 12 months
• Has fewer than 50 words by age 2
• Is hard for strangers to understand by age 3
• Leaves out sounds or syllables in words
• Struggles to follow 2-step directions
• Stutters, repeats, or "gets stuck" on words
• Has trouble eating certain textures or frequently gags

If any of these sound familiar, an evaluation is the best next step. It's the only way to know for sure, and early intervention makes a real difference.
What insurances do you accept?
+
We currently accept private pay and provide a detailed superbill after each session. A superbill is an itemized receipt with all the clinical codes your insurance needs — you submit it directly to your insurer, and many PPO plans will reimburse you a portion of the cost.

We are actively working toward accepting insurance plans in the near future. If you have questions about your out-of-network benefits, reach out and we can help you understand what reimbursement may look like for your specific plan.
How much does an evaluation cost?
+
Evaluations start at $250 and therapy sessions at $150.

We provide a superbill after each session so you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Depending on your plan, you may get a meaningful portion back.
What ages do you work with?
+
We work with children from preschool age through high school. Our practice specializes in:

• Preschoolers (3–5 years)
• School-age children (5–18 years)

Research consistently shows that earlier intervention leads to better outcomes. If you have any concerns — even small ones — it's worth a conversation.
Do you offer teletherapy?
+
Yes! We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant teletherapy to families across New York State. Many of our clients find video sessions just as effective as in-person — and far more convenient for busy schedules.

All you need is a device with a camera and a quiet space. We provide everything else, including digital materials tailored to your child's goals.
What happens at the first appointment?
+
Your first visit is a comprehensive evaluation, usually 60–90 minutes. We'll:

• Talk with you about your concerns and goals
• Review your child's developmental history
• Assess speech, language, and communication skills using play-based and standardized tools
• Answer your questions
• Discuss findings and recommendations

You'll leave with a clear understanding of your child's strengths, areas for growth, and whether therapy is recommended. A written report follows within 2 weeks.
How long will my child need therapy?
+
It depends on your child's unique needs. Some children make rapid progress in 3–6 months; others benefit from longer-term support. After your evaluation, we'll give you a realistic estimate based on your child's specific goals and diagnosis.

We reassess progress regularly and adjust the plan as your child grows. Our goal is always to get your child where they need to be — and then graduate them from services with confidence.
Do you work with my child's school or pediatrician?
+
Absolutely. With your written permission, we collaborate with your child's teachers, school SLPs, pediatricians, and other specialists (OT, PT, ABA, psychologists). This coordination makes a huge difference in generalizing progress beyond our sessions.

We can also attend IEP meetings, write letters of medical necessity, and provide progress reports for school teams.
Do you contract with school districts?
+
Yes — Chatter Nest works directly with Westchester County school districts to provide IEP-aligned speech and language services. Stephanie has years of experience serving districts through agency contracts, and now offers that same care directly through her PLLC.

We can support districts with direct services, evaluations, push-in/pull-out delivery, summer/ESY programming, leave coverage, and ongoing contracted work. CSE/CPSE participation and NYSED-compliant documentation are standard.

Special Ed Directors and CSE Chairs: use the inquiry form below and we'll set up a discovery call.
How does billing work for district contracts?
+
Districts contract with Chatter Nest directly, with billing handled through your standard procurement and PO process. Rates are set per contract based on scope (hourly direct service, per-evaluation, retainer, etc.). Insurance billing isn't part of the district relationship — that path is reserved for our private/family clients.
What credentials and licenses do you hold?
+
Stephanie De Jesus, M.S., CCC-SLP holds:

ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
New York State License in Speech-Language Pathology
• Experience with IEP development, CSE/CPSE meetings, and NYSED documentation
• Practice operates as a NY-registered PLLC

Additional documentation (W-9, COI, references) is available on request for districts considering a contract.
